Specific info

The area’s vegetation is classified as a tropical thorn forest, with large tracts of desert terrain tumbling into the Pacific Ocean on the Westside and the Sea of Cortez on the Eastside, the world’s youngest and most biologically diverse sea.

CSL, at the peninsula’s very tip, is where you find the famous El Arco (The Arch at Land’s End), the natural stone arch known the world over as a symbol of Los Cabos and its spectacular natural beauty.

ATMs and Banks

ATM cash machines accept foreign debit and credit cards and are plentiful in CSL and San José, with many in the Tourist Corridor too. ATMs dispense cash in pesos and is the easiest and cheapest way to obtain money from your foreign account.

Banks offer limited currency exchange; some do not change dollars; ask before you line up and waste time (been there, done that). Although the exchange rate will be slightly lower, it is faster and more convenient to use the many money exchange booths (Casas de Cambio) found in the downtown area of both towns.

Bank hours are generally Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 or 5 pm, with a few offering at least morning service on Saturdays. Some banks have very limited services in English. All banks are closed Sundays and holidays.

Currency

The peso is the national currency, although US dollars are widely accepted in businesses throughout both towns. Change is made on pesos. The exchange is around 12-13 pesos to one US dollar. Major credit cards are accepted in most establishments; but ask before you order, as not all restaurants and stores accept all of them, some may only accept cash. More in the currency section.

Business Hours

Most shopping malls and stores are open from 9 am to 8 to 9 pm daily, some close for siesta, especially in the more traditional town of San Jose.

Electricity

Mexico operates on the same 110-volt current as of the United States, so electrical adapters are not needed, sometimes you will need a 3 prong adapter, as many plugs here only have space for the two-prong plugs.
