Miraflores, the small inland town in the municipality of Los Cabos, has officially been named a Pueblo Histórico de México. Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío delivered the designation during the opening of the 34th Fiesta de la Pitahaya, held on July 18 and 19, 2026. According to the state government, Miraflores is the ninth community in Baja California Sur to receive it.

What does the title actually do? The governor described it as a way to recognize a community, give it visibility and unlock its tourism potential, so that more of the benefits of tourism reach the people who live there. The municipality adds that the goal is to preserve the town’s identity and promote its cultural heritage. A newly sworn-in Miraflores Tourism Council will follow up on the Pueblos Históricos program locally.

Letters, a fiesta and a lot of pitahaya

The ceremony also unveiled Miraflores’ own tourist letters, the big colorful name signs you’ll see in many Mexican towns, and the governor delivered a vehicle for services in the delegation. All of this happened in the middle of the town’s biggest party: the pitahaya fair, which celebrates the sweet, red-fleshed fruit of a local cactus. This year’s program crowned Miranda I as queen and included music, dances, parades, regional food, displays by local artisans and producers, a donkey race and, of course, a pitahaya-eating contest.

Visiting Miraflores

Miraflores sits roughly 42 km (26 miles) north of San José del Cabo, just west of Federal Highway 1, and it’s known for its hand-made leather goods. If you’d like a break from the beach and a look at the rural side of Los Cabos, it makes an easy day trip. Our Miraflores travel guide has the basics, and the day trips from Los Cabos page suggests other towns to pair it with.
